On - Farm Experiments

Background Genesis of OFR Selection of Sites & Farmer Model Used

On-farm research/trials holds key to the generation of location and situation specific crop production technologies for achieving sustained productivity. It takes into account the biological socio-economic and technological constraints operating at farmer's level.

The on-farm research has been differently conceived and defined. However, broadly characterised on-farm research is

  • Conducting experiments in farmer's field
  • Active involvement and participation of farmer, right from conceptualization of research agenda to the outcome of the research and its diffusion
  • Multidisciplinary approach with farming system perspectives
  • Maintains a direct link between on-station and on-farm research and is thus a first hand source for feedback
  • Research planning is based on inventory of local resource base needs and aspirations.
